Here is the Volume 6 of Volleyball from When you watch something, visit us first! Mr. Futoshi TERAMAWARI, General Manager of #PFUBlueCats Ishikawa Kahoku, told us about two special positions in Volleyball, Setter and Libero this time. This is the combined version of Part 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3 on our YouTube channel.
In Vol.5, we learned about Rotation and Position of Volleyball.
This time, we interviewed Mr. Futoshi TERAMAWARI, who was Head coach of Men’s Volleyball National team as well as Team Manager of Women’s Volleyball National Team, and is currently General Manager of PFU Blue Cats Ishikawa Kahoku, a member of DAIDO LIFE SV.LEAGUE WOMEN, about two special positions in Volleyball, Setter and Libero.
We hope you will find this information useful when watching games.
Part 6-1: “Keystone” in a team
Setter (S) is really the “Keystone” of the team. Of course, Middle Blocker (MB) is the key of the block. Opposite ( OP) is really an attacker. Outside Hitter (OH) is to receive Serve. All players are important.
But even among such important players, S is important because he/she is to choose to whom he/she delivers the setting ups. I think that determines the winner of the games.
Q: From Setter(S)’s point of view, does S deliver setting ups to a player who has already been scoring points by attack or to a player who may not be blocked?
It is S him/herself that makes the decision. So it is okay to deliver the setting ups to the attacker regardless of even he/she is to be blocked with two players.
If the setting up goes to this side, there will be no block or only one player’s block, but it is not incorrect to deliver the setting up to the opposite side. So more important thing is the result than to whom the setting up delivered.
So S has to deliver setting ups that are easy to hit. Therefore, S is the “keystone” of a team. Teams with a good S are strong. The reason why Japan’s men’s and women’s teams did well at Paris Olympics was because they had good S’s, Mr. Masahiro SEKITA and Ms. Koyomi IWASAKI.
*Mr. Masahiro SEKITA & Ms. Koyomi IWASAKI: Setters of Japan National Team, who participated in Paris Olympic.
I think that was significant. And now, because of the efforts of both the Japan’s men’s and women’s teams at Paris Olympics, I think Volleyball’s popularity is on an upturned trend. So I truly hope that this will be a good opportunity for the popularity Volleyball in Japan to gain momentum.
I was not S when I was playing. But when we watch Volleyball all the time, we can realize the characteristics of each S. For example, Mr. SEKITA’s characteristics. And what Ms. IWASAKI is trying to do.
We can realize what they are trying to do. I think even those who have not played Volleyball can realize this. If they watch Volleyball all the time. If they like to watch Volleyball. Watching Volleyball with thinking S will deliver the next setting up to this player. It is no problem if the prediction is wrong. When we watch Volleyball in this way, we can enjoy it more.
Of course, S is the player who really controls the team. So the importance of S. And importance of Serve and Reception. I believe that these three things are the keys of Volleyball.
Part 6-2: Qualities of Setters
Q: Why are many Japanese Setters (S) relatively short in stature?
I think that there are more players who are good at setting up among those are shorter in height. For example, there are not many players who are over 180 cm tall and who have been able to set the ball up well since they were little. There are quite few tall players in Japan.
They say that “short Ss are not good. And we have to use a taller S.” But even if S’s block is low and the opponent hits over them, Ss who keeps on setting good balls up are much useful. Therefore, it would be best to have Ss who are tall and very good at setting up from early on.
And after all, Ss are more of a genius type of player than who suddenly gets good at it. I do not know Ss who are to be seen that worked hard and became well in the national team.
Q: What do you consider a good S has?
Wide vision. And they can read the opponent’s mind. For example, they can realize this Middle Blocker (MB) has this kind of tendency. If they delay the timing of setting the ball up a little bit, they see that this MB stays without moving, or something like that.
Ss are not just setting the ball up, but studying the opponent as well. They can set the ball up while considering various things, such as the opponent’s situation, the characteristics of the players, and so on. So there is no other position in Volleyball where players have to use their heads and techniques as much as Ss do.
Part 6-3: Libero
Q: We feel that there are many players who are good at Receptions and Digs in Japan besides Libero (L), aren’t there?
Yes, there are many.
Q: How do you think of the importance of L in such a situation?
A team with a good L is strong. L specializes in receiving.
Q: Is that because having L on the court makes the team better on defense?
Significantly.
Q: “Significantly”?
Yes, significantly.
Q: Does that mean that L’s defensive ability is far better than the substituted player?
Basically, only players with far better defensive ability can be L. Only players who specialize in receiving, and have good defense and Reception can be Ls after all. It is a big difference between with L and without L. The Volleyball has changed, with the introduction of L, to be honest.
Q: What is the intention of using two different Ls between the case of Reception and that of Dig?
Each L has the strengths and the weaknesses. It is best if L is good at both Receptions and Digs. Even though a L is used in the Reception situation, he/she has to do Digs as well, doesn’t he/she?
So, of course, it is good to have a L who is good at both Receptions and Digs. There is no need to change a L who is good at both.
Also, if it is physically demanding, it is necessary to use two Ls, but if there is a L who is good at both Reception and Digs, I think it is better to use such L. This L is good at Digs but so-so at Receptions, but another L is better at Receptions. And, when coaches have to choose which L to use, I guess they decide to use two Ls together.
Q: We think that an acrobatic Dig like “you dug it!” would make the team more excited, but what do you think about it?
In today’s Volleyball, the situation where they say, “You dug it!” is the ball is irregular. And the balls dug are basically those came to the area that player can reach only.
The only other situation is to chase after the ball as it goes away and catch it to make a fine play. So I guess the good and bad of L is how well they can control the ball around them.
Q: So they are not intending to do an acrobatic Digs?
It is not that they are trying to make it look acrobatic, but that they are seen like that as a result. Players who are good at receiving the balls close to the floor look acrobatic.
On the contrary, players who make a lot of Digs easily seem not to be acrobatic, but such players are well-positioned. Well, there are a lot of reasons, but basically Ls are specialists of Receptions and Digs.
Basically, Ls are specialized players in “receiving”. So, Receiving is life-or-death matter for Ls.
Q: So L needs to be a player who can do that?
Yes. Yes. Truly. Ls are always seen that they must receive any balls. I think players who do not specialize in receiving cannot play as Ls in any team. L players are so good at Receptions and Digs, in the end.
